Brainspotting Therapy

Heal deeper with online Brainspotting therapy from Safe Haven Counseling & Wellness.
Serving adults in Austin, TX, and Minnesota via secure telehealth sessions.

What Is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a focused, brain–body trauma therapy developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003.

It works by helping your therapist locate “brainspots”, specific points in your field of vision associated with emotional or bodily tension — and hold focus there to support processing and release.

Unlike talk-only therapy, Brainspotting allows deeper access to emotional and physiological patterns without needing to re-narrate every detail.

Who Brainspotting Helps

This service is designed for adults (Millennials and Gen X) who are:

  • Coping with unresolved trauma
Struggling with anxiety, depression, or emotional blocks
  • Finding talk therapy isn’t enough to reach deeper layers
  • Experiencing physical tension, stress, or psychosomatic symptoms
  • Seeking an integrative, somatic approach to healing

If you’ve felt stuck or disconnected from parts of your emotional life, Brainspotting can help you access deeper healing pathways.

What to Expect & Safety Precautions

  • Brainspotting can sometimes bring up challenging emotions, physical sensations, or fatigue.
  • Sessions typically last 60 minutes, depending on your needs.
  • We move slowly and intentionally; you never have to push more than you can handle.
  • Planning rest or quiet time after sessions is wise to integrate the experience.

If you have any serious mental health diagnoses or are in crisis, we’ll assess whether Brainspotting is appropriate or begin with more stabilizing approaches.

How Brainspotting Therapy Works

Here’s what to expect in your Brainspotting journey:

  1. Initial Assessment & Intention Setting
We begin by exploring your goals, history, and what you hope to address.
  2. Spotting & Focus
I guide you to watch a pointer or visual grid, slowing down until we find a spot where sensations, emotions, or thoughts intensify.
  3. This becomes your “brainspot.”
    Held Processing
You’ll maintain gentle focus on that spot while allowing whatever arises — emotions, physical sensations, memories, to unfold. I provide a safe container and attuned presence.
  4. Integration & Reflection
After the processing, we pause, check in, and integrate insights or shifts. You may rest, journal, or engage in grounding exercises.

Because we conduct sessions online, you can do this from a private, safe space of your choosing. The therapeutic quality of Brainspotting translates well into telehealth formats.

Why

Benefits of Brainspotting for You

  • Deep Emotional Release: Access layers of healing beyond narrative talk therapy
  • Somatic Awareness: Work with what’s in the body, not just the mind
  • Flexibility Across Locations: Receive treatment from Austin or Minnesota
  • Complementary to Other Modalities: Can be paired with CBT, trauma therapy, grief work

Research suggests Brainspotting may help reduce symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression through its brain-body integration approach. But it’s not a guarantee; outcomes vary by person, and safety and pacing are paramount.
